An MP Speaks

Sweet little schoolgirl smile
Your golden arms beckon me on
Lips seem to speak, seem to lead me
Beautiful one
Your burning tongue

For you that I do these things
For you that I do these things

Shielding you from ill
While you're a child
I'll be your knight

There's vice everywhere
Porn on the screen
Sex in the street
Vile foreign men
As I said in the House there are sewers beneath
Waiting to burst all over us

For you that I do these things
For you that I do these things

notes: Haunting and melancholy.  The version on 1996's That's All Very Well, But... is played just a little faster, with a more prominent bass line, and with a slightly different guitar tone and vocals.

Malcolm:

I think this is perhaps the best of our slow, smoochy numbers. It was at about this time that I started playing around with the possibilities of contrasting the words and the music. So here we have quite gentle music together with a nasty lyric. By now, practically all the songs have narrators, whom I usually disapprove of. You have to fish out the meaning by reading between the lines. Personally I think it's generally obvious what I'm getting at...

MP is Member of Parliament.

Golden arms shows up in several mythologies, but it's unclear which is to be considered here.

House is either the House of Lords or the House of Commons, the two branches in the bicameral British legislature.
