God The Father

Malcolm:

Here's another early non-political song, and another joke. I think the idea is in Freud that belief or disbelief in God is often conditioned by people's attitudes towards their fathers. Little children have the same kind of attitude towards their fathers as believers have towards God - that He is all-powerful, that he knows everything, that he's going to punish wrong-doing, etc. That's the theme of the song. But I began to lose interest in psychological explanations for people's behaviour soon after this. I think politics, in a wide sense, is better at explaining the world than psychology.
